Ryan Gracie





Ryan Gracie (14 August 1974 - 15 December 2007)

Grandson of Carlos Gracie, one of the founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Ryan was born on the 14th of August 1974. From a young age, Ryan trained with his brothers Renzo and Ralph Gracie in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Earning his black belt under Gracie Barra head instructor Carlos Gracie Jr, Ryan made his debut in the biggest MMA organisation at the time - Pride FC - in 2000. With seven fights (5 wins / 2 losses) Ryan was often cornered by, and was cornerman for his brother Renzo. In 2007, Pride FC was bought by Zuffa - the company that owns the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today.

Establishing his academy in São Paulo, Ryan was dedicated to training and supporting his students including Pacrease fighter Gabriel Vella and BJJ world champion Fabio Leopoldo. Off the mats, Ryan was described by Renzo as living 'an intense and passionate life' following his death at age 33 on 15 December 2007.

Survived by his wife Andrea Cola and son Rayron, Ryan's academy in São Paulo continues to be run today by world champion black belt Celso 'Celsinho' Vinicius. His legacy is continued by the Ryan Gracie Academy, Fabio Leopoldo's Gracie Morumbi, the Renzo Gracie Association and Gracie Oceania.
